SCULPTURE

The sculptural production of Ciro Fornaro unfolds in different phases, in close analogy with his creative personality: at times he focuses on points of strength, at times on agile spatial movements, on masses, on threadlike structures, on chromatic effects or plastic transparencies. The artwork is conceived to be transmitted and disseminated, assuming its own vitality.

Almost a rejection of the figure in favor of content as a reference to reality itself, through that very negation which presupposes it; in this way, the abstraction of forms becomes a suggestive transformation of reality in its dynamic aspects, without losing the “primitive” value of its figurative origin.

He employs mixtures of various kinds: stoneware, refractory clays, steel-like iron and, moving from a horizontal style of severe and monumental forms, he comes to achieve effects of disruptive verticality. The basic data on which the artist elaborates are events linked to natural organic life (“Fragments”), but also cultural processes (Dolmenhir, Neolithic, Lastracrom, Japygian).

There is a fertile and natural energy in the volumes, in the roughness and in the geometries of the material, all marked by the utmost rigor of essentiality.

MYTHOLOGY PLATES

This series of mythological-themed plates are unique and unrepeatable pieces. Here, space is divided by chromatic effects that flow with richness and warmth across the glazed surface, which becomes a “pretext” on which to let the physical trace of the coloring material run. The vibrant images of ancient tales dematerialize the clay support, endowing it with a poetic sense, so that a creative emotion and a spirit of continuity of human work shine through.

The Fornaro Ceramic Workshop officially began its activity in 1966 in Grottaglie (Taranto).

Ciro Fornaro was born in Grottaglie in 1938 and graduated from the State Institute of Art of Grottaglie, specializing in Ceramics.

He took part for many years in the national and international artistic scene. His artistic education was greatly enriched, from a very young age, by his time in the workshop of Master Pasquale Antonazzo, where one went to learn the “craft” — a passion sustained by strong determination and an inexhaustible creative energy.

His artistic career continued to grow with artistic and research activities until the very last days of his life (*25.07.1938 †08.06.2018).
